avocado toast

In NYC there is a cafe that we adore called Cafe Gitane located in Nolita. It's tiny, and bustling, and always packed. They have the most amazing small dishes, like orange blossom waffles, and baked eggs with salmon...the cafe is romantic, chic, and very hip.

One of our favorite things to order is avocado toast. Basically this consists of an avocado mixture spread over thick, whole grain toast. It's amazing. If you like avocados as much as we do, you must try this!

You'll need:

fresh, good quality whole grain or multi grain bread
1 ripe avocado
fresh lemon juice (maybe 1-2 tablespoons)
crushed red pepper flakes
salt and pepper

Lightly toast 2 slices of the bread.

Mash avocado. Add lemon juice, and season with salt and pepper.

Divide the mixture and spread on both slices of toast. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes.

* After I wrote this post I happened to Google Gitane, and found this post on
The Kitchn ! Pics look awfully similar, eh? If you're in NYC, make sure to visit this wonderful cafe.
